Kandinsky's COMPOSITION X

Composition X ~ 1939
The striking black background makes the colors and forms stand out and literally vibrate on the canvas. The black creates depth and intensity.  My eyes immediately see the two sheets of music and, again, a stringed instrument.  This is the last of Kandinsky's series of Compositions.

The key elements of this composition is the black ocean of color on which the colors and shapes individually emerge.  The movement of forms is directed upward.  Kandinsky expressed great dislike of the color black, so it is very symbolic that he chose black as the dominant color for his last composition.

Does the green and the pink shape look like a light bulb?  What I find most fun about this is learning what others see in a piece of abstract art.  The more minds, the more we learn.

In the lower left, I think of two hands playing a reed instrument.  I see circles and arches.

This painting is currently held at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Dusseldorf, Germany.  Kandinsky painted Composition X  in Paris, France.

Question:  What makes a bad composition in art?

Answer:  Unbroken lines, that is, lines that go across a painting without being obstructed, create a speed in the painting.  These lines lead the viewer's eyes right out the edge, and then their feet follow that eye and they walk away.
