Composition IX~ 1936 |
My eyes see a mixture of rigid backgrounds for lighthearted free-flowing forms. The black shape in the middle, to me, appears to look like a heart and a brain, or the mind. Might this painting show how Kandinsky's mind and heart worked together to create the work? I also see water and fish swimming in the green on the right...... party streamers and a flower that add a decorative element. My eyes see the colors of nature reflected in this composition.
Art critics refer to this painting as "biomorphic abstraction." In art and design, geometric shapes are precise, regular forms like squares, circles and triangles. Biomorphic shapes are organic, irregular forms inspired by nature, like leaves, clouds, flowers or animal shapes. They are often rounded, curved free-flowing lines that suggest movement in the natural world.
To describe space in art, the viewer must consider both positive space, which is the area in a painting that is occupied by objects, and negative space, which is the area around and between objects. Artists use space to create the illusion of depth in a painting.
How does an artist create depth?
1. By overlapping. Placing objects in front of or behind each other.
2. Objects that are closer to the viewer are typically larger and more detailed than those further away.
3. By using lighter colors and less detail for distant objects simulates the effect of distance.
4. By using lines that converge toward a vanishing point.
Regarding spacing in art.....evenly spaced objects create a sense of balance and harmony, while uneven spacing creates a sense of tension or vigorous activity.
